WOMEN WHO SMOKE
SOON GROW OLD. PHYSIOLOGIST’S DECLARATION.' Pullman (Wash.), Dec. 10. Smoke and grow old; don’t smoke and stay youthful. Such was the advice Dr. N. G. Covington, associate professor of physiology at Washington State College gave women students at the Universitl here. “Nicotine harms girls more than men,” said Dr. Covington, “because the nervous system of the former sex is more delicate. Smoking affects the nervous ending! in our entire system and acts with paralyzing effeet upon the emotions for a short time. Consequently, it makes a woman look old before her time.” Dr. Covington explained that although smoking soothes the nerves and gives a feeling of restfulness, the nicotine often paralyzes the nerves of the stomach, causing indigestion and temporarily dulling the brain.
