NEWS AND NOTES. On the occasion of a recent visit to Waipukurau for the purpose of examining the local position in relation to the proposed streets improvements loan of £lB,OOO. Mr Murray, of the Public Works Department, commented in very complimentary terms as io the generally attractive appearance oi Waipukurau. and remarked upon the residential features as being very creditable, and meriting better paths and highways. The Waipukurau Croquet Club has postponed the opening of the 1927-28 season till Saturday. 29th inst.. owing to the Waipawa Club’s opening tixture taking place on Saturday next. Mumps and measles are still prevalent in different parts of the town, consequently affecting school attendance. The cases of mumps are not confined to children, however, adults in a number of instances being the victims.

The weather yesterday, marked a change from that of Tuesday, being typical of Spring’s brightness The Ruahine ranges are still snow-capped, and present an attractive appearance as seen forming a background for the Pukeora Sanatorium. Something in the nature of a dust storm was experienced in Waipukurau on Sunday when a strong wind was in evidence, and clouds of dust were raised. In circumstances such as these the £lB,OOO streets improvement loan would doubtless be carried bv a fairly large majority of votes. As from to-day. the office of the Waipawa Hospital Board will be located in the new administration ’lock at the Waipukurau Hospital. The sale is reported of 4000 acres of land belonging to a well-known Native and located between Wallingford and Wanstead. to a large landowner of Central Hawke’s Bav. The wool clip of Mr R. H. White, of the Whangaehu Settlement representing a total of .300 bales, is being transported to Waipukurau. and 34 bales reached he town on Tuesday. Hitherto the wool had been forwarded bv steamer to its destination. FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ COUNCIL. A meeting of the newly constituted Central Hawke’s Bay Friendlv Societies Council was held in Wainukurau on Tuesday night, in the Oddfellows’ HaH. The first business was the election of officers for the ensuing veer, as follows:—President. Bro. E. Waite (Tikokino).: vice-president. Bro. Gavin Black (Waipukurau); treasurer and secretary Bro. J. H. Hopkinson (Waipukurau); auditob. Bro. P E. Bollons (Waipukurau): trustees. Bro. R. G. Cook and Sister Robinson (Waipukurau). A genera] discussion took place-inci-dental to the adoption of the rules, and routine business was transnacted. Matters are now in a forward state as to the successful organisation of the area served bv the new bodv. and it. behoves all friendly societies to loyally assist in nromoting this desirable consummation. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. A well-attended meeting of the General Committee of the Waipukurau Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Tuesday afternoon Mr J. W Harding a vice-pre-sident occupying the chair. The principal business was the consideration of a report from the special sub-committee set up to deal with the financial and genera] position of the Association in relation to the annual show fixture. This sub-committee, of which Mr J. H. Kibblewhite (treasurer) was the convener, recommended that the show be carried on as heretofore, with the exception that the prize schedule be amended by th© elimination of one of the sections that had not # met with adequate support bv way of entries

and classes that likewise had not been appreciated. Several essential additions were made to the list of classes (Shown to make a popular appeal. The need for increased support in the matter of entries, membership, and donations to the prize fund, was stressed, and it was reported that on the latter score quite a number of additions in cash and otherwise had been promised. •
