The Carnival Spirit

HAWKE’S BAY SPRING SHOW

Glorious Weather For “ People’s Day ”

Thousands Roam The Grounds

'Though the early hours of this morning were rather unpromising for the ‘ People's Day” of the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Society’s Spring Show, the sky later became clearer and at 11 o’clock the sun was , shining brightly from a fairly clear sky, with the result that well before noon the people began to mass on that picturesque area known as the Tomoana Show Grounds, and by 2 o'clock there was a huge attendance. The Society’s beautiful show grounds have been described and described again, but the scenery is so diverse, the formation so charming in its unexpectedness, the shelter of the willows so cool and restful, that the visitor ever finds somethings delightful to gratify his senses and to tempt him to exploration. A VALUABLE POSSESSION. ,Mr. G. R. Beamish, who took up the proposition of acquiring these new grounds, as well as the Society’s executive, must now feel proud of their possession, which is worthy of any farming institution in the Southern Hemisphere. The idea was received with comparative coldness in the first instance, but the enthusiasm and abiding faith of the controlling body carried the proposal through and the sixty-two acres, comprising the area, was purchased from Mr William Nelson and the grounds officially opened by the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, in 1925. After all, the grounds have only been changed from one end of Hastings to the other, because Tomoana is practically part of Hastings now, and in a few years .the borough will have absorbed it, whilst the matter of transport, which had been quoted as a difficulty, has been solved by the constant and economic motor service. The grandstand and other improvements will come in due time to complete the appointments of this beautiful place. EXCELLENT ORGANISATION. The government of the Society is excellent and the organisation of its shows so capable that it has established a wide reputation for the method and businesslike mannei in which the details are carried out. A gentleman who has much experience of shows, from the inside, up and down New Zealand, told' a “Tribune” reporter yesterday that the Hawke’s Bay Spring Show was one of the best managed in the Dominion and stood as an example for many similar societies. BRIGHT PROSPECTS. The Spring Show has ever been regarded as the barometer of the wellbeing of the Province and,its outlook for the ensuing year, and that being so, the community'may well be congratulated on the auspicious circumstances under which the exhibition is being carried out in 1927, rich in the promise of the turn of the tide after the last three years. The lambing is more than satisfactory, the prospects of wool are good, the orchards are teeming, the grass is plentiful and the Show has established a record in entries, all of which form a good omen for the years to come. The press are indebted to the secretary (Mr. A. M. Retemeyer) and Iks officials, for their courtesy and assistance, as well as for their successful efforts to forward the award tickets in a steady stream to the reporters’ room, which considerably facilitated their work. The proceedings were further enlive-ed by the presence of the 7th Mounted Military Band, which submitted an excellent programme during the afternoon. ' .
