Wellington, Oct. 20, At the New Zealand Rugby Union meeting last night the chairman of the selection committee, Mr. E, McKenzie, reported tnat the selectors had nominated players to fill any vacancies that may occur in the team for Africa. The emergencies announced are as follows:— Backs: Heaalewood, Carleton, String, fellow, Shodgrass, Stewart (Otago), Holden, Forwards: Portei, Coulston, Conrad, A. Knight. Godfrey, Freitas, Marslin and Bird. The unions are being asked to forward nominations fo r the portion of manager of the team by November 30 as the management committee proposes to make the appointment early in December,

The selection of a captain and vice, captain was deferred until medical examination of the selected players takes place,

Mr Dean stated he wa s proceeding shortly to Honolulu on a health trip, and Mr. Kitto was appointed vicechairman pro tern. Spirited raids by the home team kept the Waratahs on the defensive fo rthe first 20 minutes of the game against North Scotland, then Gordon, racin ghalf the field on each occasion, scored two clean-cut tries, Lawton converting. *

Lawton, carving his way from midfield, scored a try and converted it himself. Findlay, from a scrimmage, got oyer for an unconverted try. At half-time the Waratahs were 18 to North Scotland’s nil. Two minutes after the re-start Wilson scored the Scotsmen’s first try near the flag, but Maxwell failed to convert it. The Scotsmen for some time were seen at their hest. Kelly scored a try which Wilson converted, then Land dropped a lovely goal and Heaps quickly added a try which was not converted. Findlay was forced to retire owing to injury to the head through collision with a member of his own side. Tn the last few minutes Lawton kicked a penalty goal. The Scotsmen sprinted and in the fight were beaten bmy the Waratahs’ cool, deliberate combination.—(A. and N.Z.)
