CANADIAN OFFICIALS PUZZLED
AUSTRALIAN TARIFF ON MOTORS. Ottawa, Oct. 1. Officials of the Government Trade, Commerce and Finance Departments are frankly puzzled by the changes in the Australian tariff on automobiles, Most officials incline to the view that Australia’s action indicates a reprisal following 18 months’ unsuccessful effort to get Canada’s antidumping duty on Australian butter rescinded. Others think Australia is endeavouring to throw the motor market towards Britain. Officials declare that they have no intention ot rescinding the "dumping duty although the tariff changes rob the treaty of much of its value. LITTLE EFFECT ON TRADE. Washington, Oct. 1. The increases in the Australian tariff on United States automobiles and parts will have little effect on the United States’ export trade, is the opinion of the trade observers of the Commerce Department. Because the Canadian branches of the United States automobile industry are well established; it is unlikely the general effect of the change will be felt here. -(A. and N.Z.)
