HAVELOCK NORTH.

PROPOSAL FOR BH'UMEN ROADS A proposal has been put forward that the portion of Te Mata road from the centre of the village to die Duart road corner might be treated with bitumen. If the Town Board could afford to do this, it would save a good deal of dust and noise, and the two churches and the district school would benefit. This is not the only piece of road needing bitumen. Some time ago a petition was put forward to treat the road from the bridge on the Napier road Jo the centre of the township, to be in keeping with tile Has tings-Havelock North road, but the petition was turned down, as the Town Board, could not possibly afford tq do so. The Town Board members, with the Public Works officials, went around the Taradale. Westshore and Awatoto roads to inspect them. The decision arrived at by the board was to hold the matter over until tliev could form an opinion as to what class of road would be applicable to their own district. This work if done, would command a subsidy from the Main Highways Board, and the road would be done with for some years at least.
