TRIVALVE'S DERBY. LIMERICK WINS*THE STAKES. Sydney, Oct. -2. lhe weather cleared up and was warm and sultry when the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting was commenced. The attendance was SO.OOtI. The course was in good order. tne New Zealand representation Was small, but classy, though it did not meet with much success. Merry Mint was New Zealand’s only startei in tne Herby He was third passing the stand the first tune behind Malttern and Chromium. Trivalve was among the bunch early, but moved up with Winalot going along die back. Coming into die straight Winalot went to the front. Merry Mint seemed to be in a good position and was loudly acclaimed, but Involve was forced along on the outside and beat Winalot by half a neck, with Black Duchess third two lengths away. Merry Mint was cause up lourtli. Fifteen nurses went to the barrier 111 the Epsom. There was a goou start, except for die much favoureu Aoraugi, winch was bauiy leit. rujisan, Vaals and White rang were tile urst to show up, but entering the straight White rang and I'ujisaii fad-’ eu out, leaving Vaals to come away and win easiy by three lengciis. Amounis temporarily showed up passing tile St. Luger stand, but nnlsheu eleventh. In die Spring Stakes Limerick always had tile race 111 hand, but McCarten held him back bard in the early stages. The finish was exciting, Limerick winning by only a long neck. Piuthair ran a good race and finished fourth. Pilliewinkie was always well back. Results Epsom Handicap.—Vaals (Jones) 8.7, 1; Mak Siccar (Munro), 6.7, 2; Gothic (A. Reed), 9.8, 3. Hou Moon was scratched. Pigeon Pie 'bolteu before the race and did not start. Fujisan was first away, followed closely by Vaals, White Fang anu Cimon. Aoraugi was left at the start. White bang moved up to second, behind Fujisan. Turning out in the back entering the straight, Vaals shot to the front and had a runaway win, heading Mak Siccar by three lengths. Gotmc was a ucck away third. Time, 1.38). Srping Stakes.—Limerick (McCarten), 8.11, 1; Pantheon (Pike), 9.6, 2; Bacchus (Cairns), 9.2, 3. Eight starters, including Piuthair and Pilliewinkie. From a good start Horton and Gag immediately took the lead from Pantheon, Limerick and Piuthair. Limerick drew up to second along the back and led into the straight, where Pantheon pressed him strongly, but Limerick gained the verdict by a long neck, lime, 2.33 J. Kensington Handicap.—Mote (8.8), 1; Magdalf (9.3) 2 ; Spaghetti (8.1), 3. Twenty-eight starters, including Penman, Alara and Arikiwi. Mote was always handy and came away in the straight and won by a length. Time, 1.27). Hurdle Race.—Bungarley (93) and Mountaineer (9.0), dead heat, 1; Piratic (11.6) 3. Fifteen starters, including Asleep. Really Castles and Tantaroo made all the early running. Approaching the home turn Royal Howard fell and brought down six other horses. Jockey M. Webster received severe spinal injuries and was sent to hospital. In a close finish Bungarley and Mountaineer passed the post together, with Piratic lour lengths away third. Time, 3.43. Asleep palled up. 'Trial Stakes.-—Bicolour (8-1) 1, Son o’ Mine (8.1) 2, Devonshire (8.10) 3. Eight starters.’ Bicolour led into the straight, where Son o’ Mine came up strongly, but failed to reach the, leader by four lengths. Tune, 2.61.

Derby.—Trivalve (Lewis), 8.10, 1; Winalot (Davidson), 8.10, 2; Black Duchess (Cracknell), 8.5, 3. All the acceptors started except Rosso. A good start was effected, and when the field settled down Maltlern and chromium were leading, followed by Merry Mint- Several changes occurred as the lenders were approaching the straight, where Winalot seemed to be the winner. Merry Mint also threw a challenge, but Trivalve came up on the outside and won by half a neck, Black Duchess two lengths away third. Time, 2.33. V.R.C. RACES. Melbourne, Oct. 2. The Victoria Racing Club’s Man-' byrnong Trial Stakes, for colts and geldings, resulted:—Mollinson (8.2, 1, Salzach (8.5) 2, The Cad (8.2) 3. Twenty-seven starters. Won by two lengths. Time, 56i. Maribyrnong Trial Stakes for fillies.—Maid of the Nook (8.0) 1, Mistral (8.7) 2, Nmyba (8.0) 3. Seventeen starteiß. Won by two lengths. Luke Wilson has engager! accommodation nt Ellerslie for three horses. Two ot these will be Raasav. who is engaged 1 in the Welcome Stakes, and Ganymede, who is in the acceptance list for the* Great Guineas. Moorland suffered serious interference during the running o f the Squatters’ Handicap at Geraldine on Thursday last, and lost a lot of ground. It cost him the race, as he was only beaten a head bv a good one in Booster. On Friday he was beaten only half a length in the Stewards’ Stakes

The Heather Mixture gelding Hae rera. who has been more or less unsound for some time past, has been turned out and will probably not be raced again. Haerera bad a lot cf pace, and hnd' he kept sound would have won plentv of races.

On the same morning Lvsander hit out very freelv during a half-mile sprint on the No. I grass, and he promises to strip in good fettle, for his engagements at the Auckland Spring Meeting. Now that the tracks are improving it will enable W.
