TRAGIC VOYAGE
OF FRENCH CARGO STEAMER MAKES PORT OFFICERLESS. FBVER AND SUNSTROKE. [By Cable — Pirn Assn. — Copyright.] (Received 3, 9.15 a.m.) Paris, Oct. 2. A French cargo steamer nas put into Libreville (the chief town in the French Settlements in the Gulf of Guinea) almost without officers. The crew relate that when the ship arrived at the Ivory Coast the chief engineer was stricken with a mysterious illness and died in a few hours and was buried at sea. The next day the chief officer rushed on to the bridge and without saying a word shot the captain dead. The wireless operator, hearing the shot rushed out and was also shot dead. The chief officer then dived into the sea and was drowned. It is believed the officer went mad owing to sunstroke.—(A. and N.Z.)
