TWENTY-THIRD SYNOD. THIRD SESSION. The third session of the twenty-third Synod of the Diocese of Waiapu was opened yesterday at 10.30 a.m. in St. John’s Cathedral with a choral celebration of the Holy Eucharist, preceded by a roll-call of members at the cancel steps. The sermon was preached by the Rev. C. Mortimer Jones. The Synod assembled in the*’ Cathedral hall at 2.30 p.m., under the presidency of the Ven. Archdeacon H. W. Williams, Commissary for .the Bishop during his absence in England, and proceded at once to the transaction of formal business. Hours of business were fixed at from 2.30 and 5.45 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m. Mr J. H. Kibblewhite was elected chairman of committee, the Rev. W. G. Drake clerical secretary, Mr R. E. H.

Pilson lay secretary, ahd sessional committees on returns ’ and accounts, finance and the “Waiapu Church Gazette” were appointed. Captain Ball the Church Army evangelist at Waikaremoana, was invited, on the motion of the president, to take a seat in Synod. The greater part of the afternoon was devoted to a discussion, in commitle, on Canon K. E. Maclean’s motion, upon the report to General Synod of its Social Service Committee. Synod then resumed, the chairman having reported the committee’s resolution that, while thanking General Synod for having opened the question, it could not agree with the report and that a select committee be set up consider the question of social purity and present a printed report to Synod for submission to General Synod. In the absence of Mr de Lautour, Mr. H. Holderness moved that the proposals of the Gisborne vestry with respect to the variation of their desire, approved by Synod of 1923, as to financial provision for the construction of a parish hall and church rooms, be submitted to a committee to consider the same and report. The mover explained that in the present circumstances it appeared more desirable, instead of spending about £6OOO on the construction of the previously proposed hall, to use about £750 in adapting the old church to that purpose and about £7OO on the addition of rooms to the church. The motion was carried and Synod adjourned. Resuming at 8 p.m., the Synod devoted the next two hours to the consideration in committee of reports and accounts.
