HAWKE’S BAY CLUB OVERCAST WEATHER EXCITING DAY'S SPORT. The Hxwke’z Bay Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting was held to-day on the club's course at Hastings in overcast weather. The course was in excellent order. The attendance was only fair at the commencement, but improved by the time the Guineas was run. A splendid finish resulted in the classic race, Doree and Paleta fight ing out the last bit neck and necK Singleton came from the rear and was half a length away at the finish After the race the blue ribband was placed round Doree's neck by Mrs G. D Beatson. wife of the vicepresident, and three cheers were given all round. The following are the results up to going to press s— TOMOANA HANDICAP HURDLES. Of 106 sovs. One mile and threequarters. 8 Mr. J. J. Spratt's br g Garson, Heather Mixture—Gazeen (J. Nixon), 11.2 1 « Mr. R. Gregory’s Mountain Top (L. Mathieson), 9.6 2 1 Mr. C. F. Vallance'i Bed Fuchsia (A. McDonald), 10.10 3 Also started: 4 Braeman 10.0, 3 Lombardo 9.9, 5 Ballyfarnon 9.8, 7 Patuki 9.2, 8 Lightmreo 9.0. Paieus and Timapouri were the coitrss scratchings. When they were lejf p Red Fuchsia went to the front from Ballyfarnon. Coming round the bend Red Fuchsia was still well dear of Lombardo and Ballyfarnon. Racing past the stand the order was Red Fuchsia, Lombardo, Mountain Tom and Lightmore. Running along the back Lombardo took the lead, followed by Red Fuchsia, Mountain Top and Lightmore. Rounding the bend for home Garzon and Mountain Top went past Red Fuchsia and were practically on even terms at (he last nurdle. Garzon cleared the obstacle the best and went on to win nicely by two lengths, Red Fuchsia being five lengths back. Lombardo was fourth. Time, 3.20. TRIAL STAKES. Of 125 sovs. Five furlongs. > Mr. G. All started in the Trial Stakes, the field getting fcway in even line, Unison going to the front from Tom Byrne, Dreamy, Clavers and Cione. Rounding the bend Tom Byrne was well clear of Dreamy, Liaison, Keddar and Cione. Tom Byrne looked a winner 100 yards from the post, but Keddar came through on the outside to win by a length, Liaison being wo lengths further bacfl. Time L 8 1-5. Cione was fourth. After a good send-off Cosmetic went to the front and led into the back stretch from Arrow Lad, Doree, Paleta and Excess The latter then went up fast and was jnst ahead of Cosmetic Paleta and Doree at the five-furlong post . Coming to the bend Paleta had taken up the running from Excess Doree and Arrow Lad. Rounding the bend the order was Paleta, Arrow Lad. Doree. Excess, and Singleton. Paleta was first into the straight from Arrow I*d. Excess. Singleton and Doree. A great race then ensued, Doree and Paleta fighting it out neck and neck with Singleton coming fast from the rear. Doree spatebed victory bv a head, half a length between second and third. Time, 1.43 3-5. Excess was fourth and Cosmetic last.

Area, Novar and Imperial Spark were in that order and so they raced into and along the back, Othon being fourth dose up. The order was much the same to the home bend, Star Area and Novar being together in front of Imperial Spark and Bennanee and Tresham. Imperial Spark dropped back when they were straightened up, and another sterling finish resulted, Tresham putting in his claim and getting up to win bv a neck, s similar distance separating second and third. Time, 2.12 2-5. Novar was fourth, then came Imperial Spark and Othon. NURSERY HANDICAP. Of 150 sovs. Five furlongs. I Mr J. S. McLeod’s ch z Raasav. by Lord Quex—Tressida (J. A.
