POLES APART

BUT UNITED BY LOVE. 21 DAYS OiTfLAGPOLE. Los Angeles, Sept. 15. To-night the marriage will take place of a pretty American girl, Mis>s Bobbie Mack. who broke a world's record by sitting on top of a Hag}, ole for 21 days. and Tom McNamara, who sat at the bottom of the pole throughout that period. Such devotion has stirred the continent. At first Mr McNamara was anxious to sit on the top of the flagpole too, but was dissuaded by Miss Mack, who gently pointed out that accommodation would be too limited. Undaunted Mr McNamara did the next best thing, and sat faithfully at the foot of the pole. whilst Miss Mack sat overhead. It has not been divulged whether Mr MacNamara proposed before or after Miss Mack had finish ed sitting. It was .however, a source of consolation and pride to Miss Mack to be able to see Mr McNamara reclining underneath, and occasionally shout conversation down to irm. As she approached breaking the record, Mr McNamara shouted tenderly and encouragingly up to her, and this was no doubt a big factor in Miss Mack ; s success.

Asaed whether the honeymoon would take place on top of a mast, Mr McNaramara smiled mysteriously. It is rumoured however that the happy pair intend to instal several practise flagpoles all round their future home.

There have been several attempts recently in the United States to establish a world's rcord for sitting on top of a pole. Most of the contestants have been men. None of these performances, however, can be said to have rivalled the feat of St. Simoon Stylites who spent over 30 years of his life on a series of pillars, begin ning from the year 423.
