MR COATES’S STATEMENT. A MINORITY VOTE. Wellington. September 29. The Prime Minister made the, following statement this evening:— “The result of the. Raglan by-election is duo to vote splitting on the nart of those opposed to the policy of the Labour party. The aggregate of the votes cast against the successful candidate shows that the Teat maiority in the electorate is definitely opposed to the principles and policy <;f the Labour Socialists. The seat has gone to the Labour partv on a minority vote, but ! predict with confidence that today’s verdict will be reversed at the general election, provided there are not too many candidates anxious to demonstrate their opposition to the principles of the Socialistic party. I feel sure that the result of this contest will be to consolidate the forces in the community which are definitely opposed to the platform of the Labour party.” PROHIBITIONISTS PLEASED. Dunedin, September 30. Much interest was expressed bv No License advocates in the result of the Raglan election. The success ful Labour candidate stood for a twoissue ballot paper, and prohibitionists calculate they will have 43 sure votes for the two-issue paper if the bill comes down this session, with the possibility of another nine. As progress returns of the voting in the Raglan by-election were received last night they were posted on the “Tribune” board, where many availed themselves of the mmortun: ■ of early learning the result. We have to thank the Telegraph Office for the prompt, manner in which the results were delivered, no hitch what ever taking place in the arrange ments.
