HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB
TO-MORROW’S MEETING.
FINAL GALLOPS.
The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-morrow promises ■to be successful from every point of vffiw. The acceptances (printed on page 2) are excellent, and the course is in good order. The first race is timed to stkit at 12 noon-
The final gallops this morning did not reveal anything of outstanding merit, although one or two did shape as if they were at their best form, Watchman and Liaison in particular. As yesterday morning, all gallops were on the outside of the course proper with the trestles well out.
Bennanee got to the end of half a mile in 53secs. without being pushed. The watch registered the same time for Singleton's four furlongs. The two-y Car-old Sunny Autumn picked up the Guineas candidate over the last three, taking 40 secs.
Liaison galloped from the six furlong post to the three in a tick over 37secs. This particular three furlongs is the fastest on the Hastings course, and it was a pleasing performance.
High Court held a slight advantage over Hinehoro for three in 4O»ecs., while Othon. not doing his best, took 54secs. for half a mile.
W. Dwyer arrived last evening with Star Area and the Guineas candidate Paleta. Not a tew are wondering if Paleta can run out the Guineas course of one mile- Not yet raced over this distance, nothing of a concrete nature can be said, bui this colt being a lazy track worker it is fairly safe to say that a mile should not trouble him.
Royal Damon and Epistle were first out after breakfast, running 5 furlongs in 65, with the former carrying most weight and finishing in front.
Sandburr was not impressive in his half mile in 54, ' and Polonaise, against the bit, took 55secs. for the same distance.
Keddar and Riverna, finishing abreast, did three furlongs well .in 391. And Kongo with Garzon (going best) ran 5 in 66). This was very fair for the hurdler.
Torquil. finishing very strong, ran half a mile with Raasay in 52 4-5, while Lombardo was half a length behind Ballyfarnon at the end of three-quarters of a mile in 1.22).
Over the same distance Gannymede and Peneus took a second less. The former apparently is a better horse on the day—he will represent Mr J. S. McLeod in the Guineas tomorrow.
Patuki (des Landes) showed a decided improvement in his schooling essay over four hurdles. He still i* a little too careful, but when he gains confidence should do well in this department.
Pure Gold, the two-year-old son of Desert Gold, is a fine big, massive colt and created quite nn impression among the track watchers. He it not yet quite ready, but in galloping three furlongs in 39| showed he hat pace.
Watchman, Abisogne, Rakaroa. in that order, got to the end of five furlongs in 66secs. The former was most convincing.
Many others did . useful work, all appearing well forward, with the consequence that to-morrow’s racing looks most open, giving promise that interesting racing will be the result.
