THE PICTURE HOUSES

COSY DE LUXE. One of the most romantic periods in history is depicted in Tim McCoy’s new starring vehicle for Metro-Gold-wyu-Mayer, '‘California,” a historical outdoor picture from the- pen of Peter B. Kyne, now at the Cosy Theatre. The story tells o{, a dashing captain of Marines, who not only helped to conquer California but at the same time won the heart and hand of a most beautifu. Spanish senorita, whose lather opposed the coming of the “foreigners.” The famous battle of Sans Pascual in which Kearney’s troops and a number of marines from San Diego were halted and put under siege, by native Californians, is one, of the high lights of this vivid historical romance. The story embraces all the vividness and coJoin ot the period when California was a series of great baronial estates granted by the Kings of Spain to their favourites. It* was the period iust before the discovery of gold. McCoy is seen as Captain Gillespie, who carried the President’s message to seize California. The role of the exquisite senorita is played by Dorothy Sebastian.. Included in a fine series of supports is another chapter of the popular “The Collegians.” This chapter has its scenes laid on the baseball field and so has not, possibly, the intimate interest that the other scenes has had, but the acting is good and the action tense—so what more could one desire?
