A DEAR DRIVE
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK £lO AND I,OSS OF LICENSE. (Per Press Association). Palmerston North, Sept. 29. ‘ Cancellation ol his license for six months and a fine of £lO were the penalties imposed by Justices of the Peace in the Police Court this morn in B on] William Watson a traveller, of Wellington, who last evening drove a motor car through the hedge ot one of the Square gardens, circled the band rotunda, then drove out towards the Post Office. The defendant was charged with intoxication while in charge of a vehicle and with having driven in a negligent manner.
One witness gave evidence that the car missed him by a foot on the footpath, while the police sergeant stated the defendant “sobered up” after the accident, probably through taking a pick-me-up A doctor, giving evidence for the defendant, stated that when he saw him at the police station two hours later he was in a fit condition to drive a car and able to look after himself. Cross-examined, witness admitted that the defendant could have been drunk two hours previously. The Bench convicted the defendant, imposing the penalties stated.
