CHANGING THE SALE DAT.

(Ip The Editor.) Sir,—The proposal introduced bv Mr Maddison at the last meeting of your Chamber of Commerce resoecting the change of sale day. in Hastings has a good deal to recommend it irom the Hastings business man's viewpoint, and possibly the farmer would welcome the change. It however affects other centres, and before the Stock Auctioneers’ Associa tion make any alteration the Waipukurau people should be consulted. Without in any way opposing the idea at this juncture, it is of sufficient importance to'receive consideration from every angle. Although Waipukurau observes the Saturday half-holiday, the voting at last noil was only about 42 majority for Satur day as against Wednesday. Should the day in Hastings be changed to Tuesday then it is obvious that Waipukurau would be fixed for Wednesday. Should that come about, then it would settle Waipukurau’s chance of getting Wednesday half-hcjidav. and I would point out that the business people in Waipukurau are iust as keen on Wednesday closed and Saturday open as are the Hastings business people. Then, what of Waipawa? This town observes the Wednesday hall holiday and it is well known that Waipawa is extremely busy on Tuesday. being Waipukurau’s sale dav Should, then, the sale dav for Wai-' pukurau be fixed for Wednesday, it would place that town In exactly rhe same position as Hastings is at present.

Mr Miyddison’s idea of a string of sales is all very well, but it seems to me the thing for Hastings to do is to change its holiday to Thursday. I venture to say such a proposal would be carried bv a large majority. I hope the Stock Auctioneers’ Association will not decide this matter hastily. Waipukurau and Wainawa are satisfied with Tuesday salo dav and any change will be strongly opposed by them—l am. etc.. J. E. HALL.
