THE WONDERFUL COW
Is anyone really conscious of the many wonders of the dairy cow, and her value to the human race? Without doubt if all dairy farmers could be induced to view the cow from the correct standpoint, it would lead to the general adoption of a system that would leave nothing undone in caring for the comfort and general well being of this marvellous animal Truly, says “Dalgcty's Review,” she is worthy of all the care it is' poser ble to give her. At the age of two years, or a little over, she commence: to produce milk, the most perfect of all human foods, and she continues to produce, with very short rest intervals, until she reaches the age of from 14 to 20 years. Butter, cheese and casein are directly manufactured ftroni the milfi, and if titg separated milk is not used for the manufacture of casein, it makes first-class food for calves, pigs, and poultry. From casein is manufactured a host of useful articles, and in small quantities it is used in making many others. ' The milk muy also be dried or condensed and delivered thus to almost any part of the world. When the cow is no long er profitable as a producer of milk etc., every part of her body, down to her hoofs and the long hairs at the end of her tail is converted into a more or less valuable article of com merce. There is no animal on the farm which provides such an interest ing study as does the cow. She lias her vagaries and ailments of course and there are still a few tilings about her that we do not understand now ever learnedly we may talk about them; but there Is one certainty about her—she will always respond to kind treatment. The elaboration of her milk is a most wonderful process, and we still have a lot to learn about it; but there is one thing that is abso lutely certain and that is that she cannot fill the pail if we do not first fill her stomach with suitable food Therefore, even if such an act is not for kindness sake, it nevertheless is necessary for the sake of profit.
