OTANE.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING (Own Correspondent). The School Committee met on Monday evening. Present: Messrs. A. E. Black (chairman) F. E. Williams, G. Cleary, G. W. Thorpe, T. Hislop, and R- Pilcher. An apology was received from Mr. T. E. Colquhoun. Correspondence was received from Sir George Hunter, M.P., through the Town Board, stating that the Director of Health had promised to give Otane favourable consideration in the matter of dental treatment next year. The Education Board advised that they could dot make a grant towards painting the roof of the boys’ shelter shed as they did not approve oi painting rusty iron. It was decided to get price, and to apply to the Board for a subsidy on a first-aid cabinet and contents. The Committee granted the school holidays on Show Day and Labour Day. Committee meetings are in future to be held at 8 p.m. Messrs. Thorpe and Cleary were appointed visiting committee for the coming month Accounts amounting to £54 14/11 were passed for payment. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 169; average 124.1. The attendance had been badly affected by mumps and measles. Miss Miller was absent sick on the 12th, and Miss Imrie ever since the holidays, but resumed duty on Tuesday. Miss Burns, supervisor of needlework, visited the school on the 22nd inst. The floors of the sheds were concreted, and a new tank erected during the Twenty native trees were planted at the rear of the school. The lawns were levelled and top-dressed and books to the value of £ll 12 6 were placed in the library. The visiting committee’s report, which was adopted, recommended that a railing be put round the recently-planted trees and that an incinerator be provided.
