MR. AMERY’S VISIT TO N.Z. WILL HE COME TO HASTINGS,? Regarding the suggestion made by the Hastings Chamber of Commerce that opportunity should be taken of Rt. Hon. L., M. Amery’s visit to the Dominion to make a concerted effort throughout New Zealand to stimulate the demands for British and Empire goods, the Associated Chambers of Commerce advised that the suggestion was well worthy of attention and that some special effort would be made on that occasion.

Replying to a question last evening the chairman stated that he did not know whether Mr Amery would be visiting Hastings or not. ■ Mr. G. A. Maddison considered that it would be advisable for the Chamber to make enquiries in this direction. If Mr. Amery was coming to Hastings then endeavours should be made to get special “Empire shopping” displays in the business area. Even if the visit did not take place the shopping week could be held. A suggestion that a competition for school children to write essays on Empire trading should be inaugurated was made by Mr J. Wilson. The chairman .considered that at the present time nothing could be done in the matter. Mr W. C. Whitlock suggested that the matter be left to the industries committee to deal with. “I would like to know if Mt. Amery is coming to Hastings,” stated Mr. Maddison. Well, I can't give any definite answer at present,” replied the chairman. It was decided to leave the question of arranging of matters Hi regard to Empire trading displays to the committee. That the Agricultural Societyshould place at the foot of the pages of its show catalogue a slogan on Empire trading was made by Mr E. Loach. It was decided to approach the Society on the matter. On the motion oi Mr. Maddison it was further decided to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs asking if Mr. Amery would be visiting Hastings.

It was mentioned that the Drapers’ Association were holding a British shopping week early in October in Wellington.
