RUGBY FOOTBALL TRIAL

TO-DAY’S GAME AT PALMERSTON WINTRY CONDITIONS, (Per Press Association). Palmerston N., Sept. 27. The weather for the Rugby trial, North Island Possibles versus Probables, is cold with a bleak easterly wind. Despite the fact that the game is not being played on a half-holiday a large attendance of the public is fully anticipated. AU the selected players assembled here yesterday and the teams as pub- I lished will take the field early in the I afternoon. THE GAME DESCRIBED. LARGE CROWD IN ATTENDANCE. Palmerston N., Sept. 27. The final trial of North Island players prior to the intcr-lsland match was played here this afternoon in the presence of a largo crowd. The team took the field as selected, the Possibles playing against an easterly wind. Play hovered about midfield, Nicholls narrowly missing a goal from ■ a penalty for the Possibles. Keene intercepted a pass but was downed by Brown, who failed to send on the ball, and a good chance to score was lost. The Possfftes were soon again on the attack and Nicholls goaled from a penalty within good range Play ranged up and down the field, being' mostly in favour of the Possibles. Brophy put the Probables on the attack but the ball went into touch. The Probable forwards, headed by Finlayson, who was playing a great game, broke away but the movement was halted. TRY TO POSSIBLES. An attack by the Possibles narrowly missed scoring. Findlayson led his forwards to the Possibles’ line, a knock-on stopping a certain score. The Possibles’ forwards, led by Galpin and Porter, rushed to the Probables’ line, where, from a scrum, Kilby worked the blind side and Rushbrook scored Nicholls’ kick narrowly failed, Possibles 6, Probables nil. Hook broke clear but his pass out when danger threatened went to Grenside. who cleared. From play in the Probables’ territory Hook kicked through. Racing to score he was collared by Brown when almost on the ball. An obstruction try was awarded and Berridge goaled from a beautiful kick. 5-6. SHEEN SCORES FOR PROBABLES From a scrum at half-way, McManus set the Probables’ rearguard moving, Sheen scoring after Brown had floored Hook. Berridge goaled—another great kick. Probables 10, Possibles 6. Nicholls failed in an opportunity to reduce the deficit from a penalty and the spell ended with the score unchanged. V BROWNLIE IN FORM. On resumption the Probables had the advantage of the wind. The Probables’ backs got going, and Brophy made a great run, dancing his way through the opposition to the front of the goal, but a pass infield was dropped, a force saving the Possibles. Kilby from the rue 1 passed to M. Brownlie, who raced through to score behind the posts. Nicholls goaled. 11—10. Ten minutes later Johnston broke through the Probables ’rank and passed to Swain who scored in the corner. Grensidg missed. 14—10. Play was now very fast. SENSATIONAL TRY. A sensational try followed. Thomas, the Probables’ full-back, kicked through and. following up fast, he smothered Brown’s kick on the line and. going on, fall on the ball. Berridge failed to convert. Possibles 14, Probables 13. Following play near midfield, the Possibles' backs swung into action and the ball travelled to Rushbrook, who ran round under the posts. Grenside goaled. 19—13. Johnston, of Taranaki, was injured and was replaced bv Stringfellow. The next score came to the Probables, when, from a scramble, the ball went to Finlayson, to Sheen, to 'look, who raced over.
