VICTORIA’S TRADE FIGURES
HAS PROTECTION FAILED? PREMIER HOGAN THINKS SO. (By Cable —Press Assn. — Copyright.] (Received 27, 10.30 a.m.) Melbourne, Sept. 27. For the year 1926-27 Victoria imported goods from overseas valued at £55,598,000 and the exports amounted to £34,600,'000, leaving; an adverse trade balance of nearly £21,000,000. To this must be added interest charges on the money borrowed to enable these purchases to be made, amounting to £2,500,000. Mr. Hogan, the Premier, says he is led to think that protection has failed, the two main reasons being profiteering by manufacturers ana the disloyalty of the people in buying imported in preference to Australian goods 1
