GENERAL NEWS AND NOTES. The weather conditions experienced during the winter months and to date this spring have been very favourable to the growth of grass and the very satisfactory state of fanning affairs is. reflected in the marked increase in the supply of cream to the Waipnkurau Dairy Company’s factory Late on Saturday afternoon n strong westerly gale was in evidence and yesterday similar conditions prevailed throughout the major portion of the day, there being occasional light showers of rain. REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY. The Central Hawke’s Bay ladies’ hockey represents lives journeyed to Porangahau on Saturday to‘play the East Coast team for possession of the Hokianga Cup. held by the latter eleven. The game attracted an attendance of about 400 people, and a fast as well as keenly contested struggle for supremacy was witnessed. L, Meha (a Pohukura nlayer) scored two goals for Central Ffawke’s Bay in the first spell and despite strenuous efforts on the part of the Coast players to notch a goal Miss Cook being almost successful on one occasion, but fell when within the circle. WAR VETERANS’ RE-UNION

SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN

Veterans of the South African War (1899-1902) foregathered in the Masonic Hall on Saturday night and fully enjoyed the annual revival of memories and associations of that Campaign. There was a very large attendance, visitors being present from Dannevirke, Hastings, Waipawa and Napier. His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. R McLean) and Mr. A. E. Goodger were also present. A letter was read-from the Rt. Hon J. G Coates wishing the veterans a successful evening. Sir George Hunter, M.P.. presided until about 10 p.m., when the chair was taken by the president. Mr. J. Cochrane. Mr. G. Smales, the hen secretary, had done everything possible to ensure an enjoyable evening. A full musical programme was gone through, principal toasts being as follows“ The King.’’, proposed by Sir George Hunter. M.P.; “Kindred Associations." proposed bv Mr. J. Cochrane, and responded to by Mr. Barton, secretary of the Dannevirke branch and Messrs Barclay and Inder, vicepresidents of the Dannevirke branch: “R.5.A.." proposed bv Mr. R, McLean and responded to by Messrs A. O. Williams and G. Oowrirk: “The Veterans.’’ proposed hy Si' George Hunter M.P., and responded to hy Mr J. Cochrane: “Sir George and Lady Hunter." nroposed hv, Mr. Gibson to which Sir George Hunter responded: “The Visitors," proposed by Mr. Gibson and responded to by Mr. A. E, Goodger.
