ARREST OF JAPANESE

STRAINED RELATIONS AT INTERNATIONAL SETTLEMENT. POLICE STATION STORMED. (Received 2, 10.10 a.m.) Shanghai, Sept. 25. Strained relations exist between Japanese residents in the international settlement and the municipal authorities as the result of the arrest of two Japanese marines, members of a landing party, by Chinese policemen during a street disturbance. Believing that the marines had assaulted a Chinese youth, the police locked them up. Japanese stormed the police station demanding their release and later a representative oi the Japanese met the Commissioner of Police and matters were righted officially, but tension remains.—(A. and N.Z.)
