ALL LUCKY TOGETHER
PETROL WAGGON’S ESCAPE. (Per Press Association). Palmerston, North. Sept. 20. The sequal to the collision at the Post Office level crossing on August 29 between the north-bound New Plymouth express and a petrol waggon, took place in the Magistrate's Court this morning when the driver of the latter vehicle,-James McQueen, was charged with having attempted to cross at a time when the line was not clear. The engine-driver, stated Senior Sergeant O 'Grady, sounded the whistle on approaching the crossing and the warning bells aad been ring ing. The defendant bed been very lucky in that he and his lorry got out of the smash so lightly. His Worship: Both the defendant and the town were lucky. Senior Sergeant O’Grady jaid the lorry was carrying 550 gallons of benzine at the time. Bad visibility, and approaching traffic and pedestrians were blamed by the defendant for his not seeing the train until just as he was on it, stated counsel for the defendant. The lorry had only had its tanks half full.
A fine of £3 was imposed and costs 10s.
