FINED £100

USED PREMISES AS COMMON GAMING HOUSE. Palmerston North, Sept. 5. “Although the accused has been bookmaking for some years and carries on a fairly large business, there has never been any suggestion whatever that he has not played the game right up to his last halfpenny,” said counsel for James Purvis, who was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with having used his premises as a common gaming house.

“I suppose he would not get through his work if he didn’t,’’ said the Magistrate.

Police statements were given to the effect that on the morning of September 3 about £s* was taken in as many minutes. There were no convictions against the accused previously but the maximum penalty was asked. A fine of £lOO was imposed.
