LAST SEASON REVIEWED. IN HAWKE’S BAY ASSOCIATION’S REPORT. The annual report of the Hawke’s Bay Lawn Tennis Association nresented at the annual meeting stated that the number of affiliated clubs in the assocation was now 16. while the total nlaying membershin was 1421. This was a reduction on that of the previous year, and was due to the formation by the Gisborne and East Coast Clubs of a separate association. and to the transfer of two clubs to the Maori Association One club had seceded from the association, bnt the majority of the remainder showed an increased membershin
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.
These were held in conjunction with the Hastings Club’s tournament during Christmas week. Owing to clashing with the New Zealand championships. the competition was nrac tically confined to Hawke's Bar players. Results were:— Men’s singles: Mr G C. Glennv. Ladies Singles: Miss F. Bennett. Men’s Doubles: Messrs R. D. Brown and H Elliott. Ladies’ Doubles: Mrs A. Hetlev and Mis® F. Bennett. Combined Doubles : Mr H Thompson and Mrs Gardiner. Bovs’ Singles : M. S. Mitchell. Girls’ Singles: M. Williams. MATCHES. The provincial team played Wairarapa at Masterton on December 4th. winning the event bv 21 matches to 11. The team was hospitably ntertained by the Wairarapa Association. This was the only interprovincial match played Dr. Howard Christie, of Wanganui, whose enthusiasm for the game is well known early in the season presented a challenge cun for comjietition among the Wanganui. Taranaki, Manawatu. Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay Associations. Wanganui became the first holders of the trophy and have since been unsuccessfully challenged bv Manawatu. Wairarapa and Taranaki. It was proposed that this association enter a challenge for a match earlv in the coming season.
Open tournaments were held bv thHastings. Hawke’s Bar Dannevirke Waipukurau. and Waipawa Clubs. All were popular, Waipawa in particular achieving what most he a record for a club tournament.
