ADVENTUROUS LADIES

CROSSED AUSTRALIA BY CAR.

INTERESTING ADDRESS IN HASTINGS.

Few men can boast as to having undertaken a trip across Australia per medium of a motor car let alone members of the opposite sex yet in Hastings yesterday were two ladies who had actually accomplished this hazardous trip. They are Mrs Gladys Sandford and Miss Christie, and last evening Mrs Sandford addressed a large gathering in the Wesley Hall. To aid her in the narration of the exciting and rather arduous experiences of the tour, which extended from Sydney to Pe’rth and Darwin to Adelaide, Mrs Sandford presented some lantern slides which clearly indicated the novel situations that hefel the two New Zealanders. Numerous photographs of the trying and strenuous work that the car—an Essex six—had to do were presented on the screen to the audience and Mrs Sandford explained how frequently it was necessary for herself and her friend to chop down blue-gum trees so as to lift the car out of bogs or creeks. Several bright and interesting little episodes that befel the adven turous pair were given by the lecturr who ably described the life and customs of the Australian blacks. Mrs Sandford and Mies Christie are at present conducting a tour throughout New Zealand and the actual car in which they traversed the wilds and deserts of Australia was to be seen in Hastings yesterday. Covered in dust and bearing the autographs of several prominent people in cities and towns visited it created quite a fair share of excitement and interest as it paraded the streets.
