SCHOOL BALL. (Own •The annual ball of the Waipawa District High School was held on Friday evening and proved a very successful function. There was a very large crowd present The ball onened with the grand march, and the children, from this on until 9.30 n.m. took the floor and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A dainty supper was then served in the concert hall, after which he room was cleared and used by the juveniles for games. whilst tho main Ijall was taken up bv the adults for dancing until the close of the function at 11.30. Supper was provided for the adults on the stage. The majority of the children were in fancy dress, many of which were quite original. Excellent music foi the dances was supplied by Miss O Reillv’s orchestra. The headmaster. Mr Hill, and the teaching stall supervised the dancing, whilst the ladies’ committee had charge of the supper arrangements generouslv sunplied bv the parents. A feature <4 the function was the beautiful decorations arranged bv Mrs W. Ness The committee are to be confratulated on the success of the affair, which netted approximately £35. A large attendance is anticipated at the theatre on Tuesday eve e when special and appropriate pictures are to he shown, the proceeds of which nre to be in aid of the Bov Scout funds. Oannevirke. August 28. The match between Northern Southmn Hawke's Bav was plaved at Rugby Park on a heavy eround. Stamina told, and the Northerners won by 30 points to 18 CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES Ihe Central Hawke’s Bav chainpronship fixtures were advanced tn a stage bordering on completion on Saturday, when Old Bov f s (Waipukurau) and the Waipukurau seniors met in the last match of the season, and the junnior section was brought within a playing Saturday of com pletion. On Russell Park Waipukurau the only championship game was that between he seniors of the local clubs, this attracting a fairlv large attend ance of the public, while an earliei primary school contest (between Napier and Dannevirke representatives') also claimed considerable attention.

WAIPUKURAU v. OLD BOYS Old Boys had the advantage ol die wind in the first half, and at the outset looked like holding their own against the championship winners. The opening score was that of Jim King, who has lately been consistently prominent as a try-getter. Joe goaled Nickalls, a few minutes later, had a penalty kick, but was unable to pilot the ball over the bar. A good passing movement was initiated I. Wylie, who sent the ball smartly to Piki. the latter transferring to Alexander, he being collared after progressing along the line. McKenzie. who handles a ball in good style and kicks well. w**is conspicuous for useful defensive work, sending the leather into the Waipukurau 25. Aji excellent passing attack. A.. Smales passing to F. Smales, the ball being subsequently handled by Wells. King, and Gibson, resulted in she latter gaining a try. Joe King was unsuccessful with the kick. The next incident of notq/was n potted goal bv Spencer, gth is evoking a round of applause; On resuming. Bridgeman. Harvev ami Smith were to the fore in forward onslaughts, but the defence held good A penalty to Waipukurau enabled Joe King to goal. 15—0.

In the second half, despite the disadvantage of facing the wind. which had died down considerably, however, the Old Boys succeeded in keepink the Blues at bav for the whole of the half, with the exception, of one occasion of scoring penetration. A. Smales made a good but inffectual effort to kick a goal from the field, and F. Smales was to the fore a few minutes later in opening up the play. The side was minus the services of Fogarty, however, this plaver having injured; his ribs in the first spell. Jim King again figured in a scoring record, but Joe. with a xaod attempt, was unable to convert the cry. Led by Prebble and Woodward, the Blues attacked strongly, but Piki burned the tide by breaking through the ruck and kicking into Waipukurau territory Scrambling play marked the closing stages of a game that was noted more for its friendly spirit than keen rivalry. .Mr A, E.
