TEST MATCH WITH AUSTRALIA. GAME SURPRISINGLY DRAWN. Brisbane, Aug. 28. The hockey test exhibition surprised followers of the game here, who anticipated a victory for the New Zealanders; but the Australians gave an excellent display and the match was drawn, three goals each. The game was free and open, fortunes varying throughout, and the issue was always in doubt. The bril, liant combination of the New Zealanders was countered by the individual dash and doggedness of the Australians.

After a quarter of an hour’s play, Australia drew first blood. The forwards attacked, Fletcher miskicked and Nettleton ran up to score. Even play followed till, as the result of a scrummage round the Australian goal. Spiers netted. Half-time saw the board reading: New Zealand 1, Australia 1.

Up to this time Australia appeared to have the better of the game, but after the resumption the New Zealanders attacked strongly, Lusty scoring cleanly from the wing. The New Zealand forwards followed up again, forcing the defence back, Bel] scoring. With the advantage of three to one, the New Zealanders were playing well, when Australia took the offensive, Nettleton scoring a second goal >n completing an excellent movement- The forwards attacked again, the New Zealanders falling back and losing position. Fletcher cleared but Nettleton snapped up the ball, scoring a third 8oa) and making the tables even, pen play followed, but there was no change on the scores. Although the New Zealanders showed superior combination, the scones give a fair indication of the evenness of the game. DANNEVIRKE DEFEATS WAIRARAPA. Maeterton, Aug. 28. Playing at Greymouth on Saturday Dannevirke succeeded in lifting the Norden Cup from Wairarapa, winning by three goals to two. MORORO CUP GAME. Te Awa successfully defended the Mororo Cup from a challenge by Technical Old Girls on Saturday, winning by three goals to nil after a fairly even game. Goals for the winners were shot by Miss Lynch (2) and Miss Mortensen. For the challengers Miss Jane made a fine solo run to the goal mouth but spoilt a good attempt by a mis-hit. Messrs Ahearn and Cameron umpired. COMPETITION GAMES. Te Awa juniors defeated Whakatu by two goals to one after an even, hard game. Technical College and Technical Old Girls drew three all after a ragged game. Te Awa B won by default from Technical B.
