NORTHERNERS ATTACK SOUTHERNERS.

BOMBARDMENT OF NANKING CONTINUES.

(Received 27, 9.15 a.m.) Shanghai, Aug. 26. The Northerners launched a genera l offensive against the Southerners by crossing the Yangtsze under cove of fog and landing at Lungtan, o small town midway between Nanking and Chinkiang, for the purpose o' cutting off the retreat of the Southerners to Shanghai. The crossing was carried out in eight leavily-laden river craft towed by launches. A portion was repelled when Southeri sentries observed the movement They directed a battery of machine guns thereon and compelled a retir*ment with many casualties.

The Shanghai-Nanking railway was torn up by Northern spies last night, causing a suspension of traffic. One train carrying coolies was derailed, killing six. The bombardment of Nankin froir Pukow continues. Guns are roaring incessantly in covering the movemen* of the ferries conveying troops across the river. There has already been a minor re volt among the Southern forces in Nanking.—(A. and N.Z.)
