RA MACKAY.
DEATH IN GISBORNE A WELL-KNOWN MAORI. Gisborne, July 14. The death occurred to-day of one of the oldest and best known Maori* in Poverty Bay, Ra whirl Maki, better known locally as Ba Mackay, who was over SO years of age. He was born at Whangara, being a &on of a whaler who had a station there. When a boy he took part in the campaign against Te Kooti, and after the rebel Hauhaus’ first campaign lumc Ka went to the Thames goldfields. When working a claim he received news of the Poverty Bay massacre by Te Kooti and returned home to find his mother had been killed by Um Hauhaus. Later Ra followed the sea and wag at times in command of the tug Marta Taneaka and the steame* Rosina, well known trading vessels in the early days. Some time ago Ra, who was apparently in the best of health, paid a prolonged visit to Auckland and only recently returned to Gisborne.
