In aid of the Hastings Unemployment Fund, a sacred concert will be given in the Municipal Theatre next Sunday evening. The programme will be rendered by the Methodist Church Choir, augmented by other singers and instrumentalists.

The choir will be conducted by Mr. H. C. Hillsdon-Hutton, Mrs A. Christie will he the pianiste and Miss Napier organist. The concert will begin at 8.15, and it is hoped that a large number of the public will attend, so I hat the efforts of the choir mnv be the means of considerably swelling ffe unemployment fund.
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. At the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council held last evening, the Minister of Public Works, writing on the question of relief of unemployed, said, in answer to the council’s questions, that: (1) In the case of capital works which the local body decides to proceed with out of ordinary revenue, the Government will subsidise wages expenditure to the extent of 50 per cent., based on Government rites oi pay for relief workers (married men 12/-, single 9/-) provided such labour expenditure is not less than 60 per cent, of the total cost of a work.
(2) No subsidy will be provided if the expenditure on materials exceeds 40 per cent, of the total cost of a work.
(3) The Government will not unconditionally subsidise voluntary contributions, and the stipulations in the case of capital works that labour expenditure must be at least dO per cent, of the total cost, and that subsidy on labour will be cased on reliqf work rates of pay, apply also to works undertaken with voluntary subscriptions. (4) All works which a local body decides to undertake for the relief of unemployment must lie submitted to and approved by the Public Works district engineer of the district if it is intended to obtain n subsidy from the Government. The letter was received.
