CABLES IN BRIEF. A violent atorm raged last night in Paris. There was considerable damage from lightning and cellars were flooded. A storm caused awful suffering in Lancashire. Thirty families are homeless in Mosshead, owing to the bursting of a reservoir. Thousands of pounds damage resulted in many cotton mills. The river Irk overflowed at Middleton and 100 families are homeless. Young men fully dressed swam with ropes to houses to rescue the inmates. Herbert Hanley, aged 22, rescued 20 women and children and then collapsed.
At Cologne, Harry Domela was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment for masquerading as Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, Baron von Korff and Prince of Leiven. Hilarity prevailed throughout the trial. Even the judges were unable to suppress their mirth when the ex-coal heaver "related his adventures. He described how, despite his own objections, everybody, including police officers, addressed him as “ Your Royal Highness,” and bowed and stood at attention when he arrived.
It is officially announced that all operations in the Spanish zone of Morocco have ceased, following the disarming of all hostile tribes. The Commonwealth Treasurer announces an accumulated surplus of £2,999,000 for the past financial year. Of this, £1,000,000 is required for expenditure on naval construction. Revenue for the year was £63,375,000, and expenditure £6o,’ 752,000. Customs revenue amounted to £43,552,000, an increase of over £4,000,000 compared with the previous year. Income tax brought in £1 1,000,000. The Chancery Court has granted a compulsory winding up order for the Beecham trust. Dealings in the Commonwealth loan opened at one per cent, discount.
