PATANGATA COUNTY.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. (Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Patangata County Council was held in Waipukurau yesterday. Present: Crs. Chas. Pattison (chairman), Thos. Butler (deputy-chairman). J. D. Ormond, A. W. S. Longley, C. R. Edgecombe, E. C. Nation, H. R. White, and A McGaffiii. An apology for the absence of Cr. E. T. Wilder was tendered, A special meeting of the council was held and a special order passed as to the liability of ratepayers in the Otane Riding for the Otane Town Board Town Hall loan, a period of two years being favoured for the loan. The following correspondence was dealt with:—
L. M. Monckton, thanking the council for a grant of £5O for road requi remen ts.—Received. Sun Insurance Office, in connection with the claim for compensation as to the death of P. J., Cleary, £1023 7/6 had been paid into the Public Trust Office.—Received.
Napier Harbour Board, as to the reduction (from 10 per cent, to 5 per cent.) in the amount of commission for collecting rates, A conference would be convened to consider the position.
The chairman stated that without notice to the local bodies concerned the original Act that protected them in the matter had been repealed. The conference held recently hadi proved ineffective.
Rouse, Black and Sons, Ltd., account for £l7 10/-, alterations to trucks, was passed for payment. N.Z. Farmers’ Union, in regard to compulsory third-party risk insurance, the Government to collect the premium.—lt was agreed to support the proposal.
Department of Agriculture, advising that the supply of a motor car for the stock inspector operating in the district is not regarded as necessary.—No action was taken.
Public Works Department, forwarded advices in regard to:—(1) Subsidies totalling £1129 17/7, (2) licensing of tractors, (3) annual road estimates (1927-8), It was advisee! in regard to the point raised by the council that the payment of a fee was due for the use of the highways—whether for hire or otherwise. If not in use for any specific period the owner of a tractor could claim a refund on the annaul license fee. A total of £3050 was revealed in the metalling and formation estimates as to applications to the Public Works Department, drafted by the engineer. The details show that £2500 would be provided by the council. The applications are as follows: — Te Tohi road £lOO, Old Hill £lOO, Mangarara £l5O, Stoddart’s £5OO, Lake £lOO, Long Range £5OO, Wallingford Bush £5OO, Upper Mangaorapa £5OO, Schaeffer’s £5OO, Cook’s Tooth extension £5OO, and Siteman’s £lOO
No. 5 District Higways Council, as to the following matters:—(l) Waipukurau traffic bridge, (2) old Station bridge No. 17. The engineer observed that he did not consider it necessary to erect as long a bridge as the present one, and Cr. White remarked that it had been suggested at the Highways Council meeting that the new bridge be 3(K> feet less. Lands and Survey Office, as to a schedule of thirds. A total of £847 11/3 was shown by the council in its scheme of expenditure, as prepared bv Mr. R, J Sidwell. P. A. Milne, sanitary inspector, reported that one case of infectious disease had been notified, viz., typhoid fever.
It was resolved: “That the rates for the current year, as set forth in the notice of intention, be struck.” It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Longley, seconded by Or. Edgecombe, to pay a further sum (£5) in respect of damage to the property of Mr. Thompson (Porangahau), incidental to reading work. This brings the payment to £3O.
