WORKING UNDER DIFFICULTIES

(To the Editor.) Sir,—The accurate and intensive work which the postal officials of Hastings arc expected to carry out during their daily routine is severely .handicapped and restricted by the congested and antiquated surroundings in which they have to perform their multifarious duties. If a factory owner asked his employees to work under the conditions which prevail in the Hastings .Post Office, the factory inspector would ask him to make an explanation before the S.M. and would press for a substantial fine. The Government, however, has a “carte blanche” to do as it pleases. Many months ago a postal official at a Hastings re-union commented on the up-to-date plans for the additions to the Hastings Post Office, which, he stated, would provide accommodation for tile next 20 years. Have the Public Works Department embalmed these plans for another period. It seems farcical that visiting Ministers to Hastings are asked to view the congested condition of the Hastings Post Office, and still no move is made to improve conditions.—l am, etc., RED TAPE. Hastings, 28/12/26. [A letter from the PostmasterGeneral, published in this issue, states that the plans of an extensive addition to the Hastings Post Office building are nearing completion and that it is hoped the work will be proceeded with at an early date.— Ed. H.B.T.]
