PLUNKET SHIELD. AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. Christchurch, Dec. 27. The Plunket Shield match Auckland versus Canterbury was commenced to-day. The wicket was very dead after the recent heavy rain and the weather dull and threatening. A few light drizzling showers fell about midday. Dacre won the toss and sent Canterbury in. The batting was very dull, except a good stand by Olliver and Page, who stopped the early rot. The Canterbury bowling was very weak, and the Auckland batsmen much more confident. Conterbury in the first innings made 128—Page 30, Olliver 29, Patrick 24, Read 15, Cunningham 11. Player took six for 38, Bowley two for 39, Alcott two for 38. Auckland scored 149 for three— Mills 55, Bowley 34, Cooper not out 42, Frater 12. Sandman took two for 48, Read one for 32, Cunningham none for 46. WELLINGTON v. OTAGO. Wellington, Dec. 27. The Wellington-Otago Plunket Shield match was continued to-day. Wellington compiled 448 in the first innings, and the visitors started but stumps were drawn before their account was opened. Victoria lost one wicket for 573— Woodfull 133, Ponsford not out 334, Hendry not out 86. The weather was fine and the wicket excellent. '■The opening pair, Woodfull and Ponsford, gave 20,000 spectators a thrilling day’s cricket and the visiting bowlers and fieldsmen a gruelling time. Hendry joined Ponsford and, inspired by his partner, kept the tired bowlers and fieldsmen busy. Both batsmen were going strong when time was called. In tlreir first innings New South Wales made 221. QUEENSLAND v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Adelaide, Dec. 27. South Australia in the first innings made 579—Alexander 88, Wiliams 56, Pritchard 16. Rowe took three for 82, Benstead two for 121. Queensland lost six for 203—Gill 20, Oxenham 47, Thompßon 91. Oxenham and Thompson made a fine stand with lively cricket for the third wicket. Otherwise the visitors found it difficult to negotiate the howling of Williams and Halcombe. The latter is a fast bowler still in his teens, playing his first interstate match. MARYLEBONE IN INDIA. A DRAWN GAME. ' Calcutta, Dec. 26. After beating the Indian and Anglo-Indinn schools at Bengal, when Sandham made his sixth century of the tour, Marylebone played a drawn one-day match against British schools at Bengal. Endeavouring to hit runs quickly, Marylebone lost four wickets for five. Then Sandham, Parsons and Wyatt played out time (Sydney “Sun” cable.)
