i The death of Mr A. I’. Bettinson, 1 of the National Sporting Club, is an- t nounced by .a London message. i Archbishop Julius, who is at pre- 1 sent visiting England, will sail for i New Zealand on January 28, 1927, by the Cathay. The Archbishop’s health has greatly improved. A Melbourne cable reports the death at Monte Carlo, from heart failure, of Sir Rupert Clarke, well known in Australian sporting and theatrical circles. Commandant Arthur Caleott, who has been in control of the Hastings Salvation Army Corps since February last, has received notice of.his transfer to Dannevirke. He will bo succeeded here by Field-Major Wyatt, of Gisborne, who is expected to take up his duties on January 13th, on which date Commandant Caleott leaves to assume his new charge. The appointment was announced yesterday of Mr N. L. Wright, M.Sc., to tho position of analytical chemist at the Dominion Laboratory. Prior to the war Mr Wright was employed in the Dominion Laboratory; but resigned to join the Expeditionary Force scholarship, and later continued his studies in England. Latterly Mr Wright has been engaged with various research associations in England. The appointment is announced of Mr J. Callaghan, M.A., as professional officer to the new Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Mr Callaghan, who is at present employed by the Auckland Education Board as instructor in agriculture, represented New Zealand at the Wembley Exhibition as information officer. Lady Dunleath, in a private letter received at Melbourne, states that she has lost her book containing the addresses of Australian and New Zealand officers who stayed at Ballywater, North Ireland, during the war rind added that she would lie grateful if they would forward their addresses to. her. She and Lord Dunleath wished them all a happy Christmas and New Y ear. A large number of Hastings residents will learn with deep regret of the sudden death, at "Wanganui, of Mrs J. B. Griffiths, who passed away in her sleep. Mrs Griffiths’ husband, who held the position of accountant at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Meat Cb.'s offices in Hastings, left sonic time ago for England-and Mrs Griffiths left Hastings last Monday week for Wangafiui, where she intended spending Christmas preparatory to sailing, with her two daughters, ior the Old Country to rejoin her husband. Her daughter, Miss Gwenda Griffiths, was dux of tho Hastings High School for Hie current year.
