NEWS AND NOTES

(By

“Custodian.”)

Congratulations to .M.C.X on their meritorious win over the redoubtable Whakatu pack. Although the win was a surprise—l w&b going to say a fluke—the Y.. deserved their success, as they trained hard for thu particular game, apd the result was another instance of the “glonouf uncertainty of sports.” e For Y.M.C.A. io win the coveted Hibbert Shield is indeed another argunient in favour of physical fitness. At the beginning of the season they were well behind as regards points in the ladder, but the pluck, perseverance and enthusiasm of the members had its due reward. The refereeing Ims been severely criticised, but it was ever thus whera sport is concerned. There were too many unofficial referees on the line. Fortunately these gronchers have not got the last word, and in fairness to the official whistler, the game waa ably controlled. The success of the Y.M.C.A. was due Io the way they tossed the ball about; the combination was excellent, the fitnes s of Jhe team was most marked, aud their defence was sound. The issue was in doubt all'through, but Y.M. were more aggressive and had the best of things towards the end of an exceedingly hard game. Clark (Y.M.) had a field day, scor. ing three of the goals for his side, and J.e Roy was the other to find the net. For United. D. Penman (2) and H, Penman (1) were the only snorers. There was some very sparkling glimpses of good play, but the beet piece of work during the game was the fast ground shot by D. Penman, It was a beauty, nnd deserved th. plaudits the player received. The passing of United's forwards was very weak, and many opening, were upset by the very erratic dis. play in this department of the game. Young and Gilmour both played * great game at full-back for Y.M.C.A,
