Decisive Battle Expected FOR POSSESSION OF HANKOW. RED MENACE GROWS SERIOUS. [By Cable—Presr Assn.—Copyright.] (Received 4, 11.15 a.m.) Pekin, Sept. 3. Wu Pei-fu is reported to have been deposed from the command of the anti-Cauton allies, and now virtually a prisoner aboard the war vessel Yangtse. Wu Chang is believed to have been regained as the result of an offensive by the allies, who opened a dyke, Hooding the enemy area. Both sides are preparing for a decisive battle fop the possession of Hankow, which is overcrowded with refugees.—(A. and N.Z.J SERIOUS CRISIS REACHED. SOVIET FINANCES EFFORT. Pekin, Sept. 2. The situation in China is the most critical that has arisen since the revolution of 1911. The Central Government is threatened with extermination by the Bolshevik Chinese forces. An expedition under Russian leadership threatens to capture Hankow. Marshal "Wu Pei-fu, the defending commander, was wounded in the chest to-day. The tide of battle favours the Cantonese, Defence reinforcements are being rushed from the north.
Yesterday Wu Chang was captured Red forces are threatening the city. British warships are rushing marines to the defence of foreign residents in Hankow and are convoying merchant, rnen. They threaten to fire at the first snot from the Red forces. Marsha) .Sun Chuan-fang, controlling Shanghai, is sending reinforcements to assist Wu Pei-fu.
