“I’LL TAKE MY OWN LIFE.”
THREAT BY DRILL DEFAULTER Christchurch, Sept. 3. “Very well. You know how it will finish up. I'll take mv own life,’* said Thomas Barlass, a drill defaulter, when fined 5s and costs on each of fjvo charges of failing to attend drill, by Mr. H. P. Lawrv, 8.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. Barlass, in the box, said that he had to work very hard during the day, and it was not a fair proposition that he should have to attend drill in the evenings. If there were a war he would enhst, but there was no war. so he did not intend to dril.l The Magistrate: I will make the fine heavier every time you come before this Court.
“Right you are,” said Barlass, >n a very aggressive manner. “I know what I will do.”
The Magistrate: Don't be silly. Defendant will be fined 5s on each charge with costs. “Very well, I'll take my own life.” said Barlass, when told to leave the box.
