WAIPUKURAU NOTES.
(Own Correspondent.) The Rev H. C. Stewart, of Tuakau (Auckland province) is to conduct the service in St. Andrew’s Church on Sunday next.
Miss D. Alridge, of Taihape, has been appointed to the clerical staff of the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board, and is expected to arrive in Waipukurau on Thursday. Mr E. Broad, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, resumed duty to-day, after several weeks’ holiday leave, lathe course of which h 0 visited the West Coast (South Island). Mr E. B. Waddington, manager oi the local branch of the Bank of New South YVales, has been called to Wellington, owing to the illness of his father. Mr R. J. McDonald, of the Hastings branch, is relieving. An inspection of the Waipukurau District High School—all departments —was carried out last week by Dr. J. W. Mcllwraith and Messrs D. McCaskill and J. Brunton, inspectors of the Education Department.
Mr W. Le Bas, in charge of the hairdressing department of Mr Gavin Black’s establishment, had the misfortune to cut the top off -a thumb during the weekend, and consequently will be unable to' pursue his calling for some daysMr lan H. Smith, electrical engineer of Palmerston North, is at present on a business visit to Waipukurau. A Cadet training course of six clays’ duration is being held this week on Russell Park. On the Public Works estimates for the year ending March 31 next appears £l6OO on account of aditions to the YVaipukurau Post Office and £l5OO on account of a new Post Office at Waipawa. Only 99 local passengers booked tickets to Napier on Saturday morning, the number on the special Ranfurly Shield train being 40. On arrival in Waipukurau from Palmerston North this train had about 200 passengers aboard. A great change from the crowded trains of the previous Saturday! In the series of matches played dur Ing last week against the Dannevirke High School ,at Dannevirke, the YVaipukurau District High School representatives were successful in the football fixture (playing Dannevirke B) by 9 points to 5, and at basketball the girls winning by 13 points to 10. At hockey the girls were defeated by 5 goals to nil. The visitors were liberally entertained by their Dannovirke hosts.
To celebrate the breaking-up of the District High School for the spring holidays—two weeks’ duration —the secondary scholars and ‘ ‘ old boys and girls” assembled on Friday night iu St. Mary’s Hall for a dance. Mr HR. Kirby, master of the Secondary Department, on behalf of scholars past and present made a presentation to Mr Ken McKenzie for his valuable assistance as pianist. A grant appears on the Public Works estimates for the main highway between Norsewood and Whetukura, also £4OO for the proposed Whe-tukura-Tourere road, which was recently the subject of a largely attended deputation of settlers to the member for ho district.
