And River Straightening £430,000 SCHEME CONSIDERED. PALMERSTON N. CONFERENCE. (Per Press Association.) Palmerston North, Aug. 24. A conference was held this morning between the Manawatu-Oroua River Board and 13 local bodies cited by rt to appear before the commission set up to determine the basis of oontribution towards the board’s £450,000 flood control sfheme. It was mentioned at the conference, which took the form of a round table talk, that 70,000 acres of land were affected, and that the scheme provided for shortening the length of the Manawatu river from Longburn bridge to the sea by over 30 miles. Replying to questions, the chairman of the board said that the State would have to pay £250,000 to enable the execution of the project and various features which were discussed at length.
