MEXICAN PRESIDENT RESOLUTE
FATALITIES IN STREET BATTLE.
Mexico City, Aug. 19. In reply to the Episcopate’s request to suspend tile recently enforced religious regulations, President Calles says he is unable to amend the constitution and because of his political convictions cannot submit to Congress a bill modifying the religious laws. Two deputies were mortally wounded, Colonel Andres Garcia was killed, and Thomas Garrido, ex-Governor of the State of Tobasco, was shot is the face in a street battle in the business section to-day as the outcome of bitter rivalry between the political factions in Congress. It is estimated that about 20 participated. People in the streets became panic-stricken. A woman was wounded.—(A. and N.Z.) Troops ordered out. Vancouver, Aug. 19. A message from El Paso, Texas, states that the Mexican troops have been ordered to the border opposite Columbus, New Mexico, following the discovery of a planned movement of a band of heavily-armed men into Mexico in a revolutionary movement, according to Juarez military officials. —(A. and N.Z.)
