Glowing Accounts

NEW GUINEA GOLDFIELDS. ■WARNING TP ALL BUT FIT MEN, (Received 21. 9.5 a.m.) Sydney, Aug. 21. A number of mining men from New Guinea, who came to Sydney to furchase equipment, give glowing accounts of the recently discovered gold fields in Bulolo River and Edie Creek district, Papua, after a visit to the scene of operations. One declared that it was the richest find of reeent years, and that 50,000 ounces of gold were stored in the fields awaiting transport. According to reports it ia difficult to take a dish sample from Edie Creek, where extensive sluiefng is in progress, yielding less than five pennyweights. The narrator himself saw yields of 20 ounces to the cubic yard. He added that he thought the statement that 1000 ounces OUty were being taken from Edie Greek were quite credible. The fcold wae of poor quality, and worth about 50/. an ounce. He strongly warns intending fortune-seekers that the country is mountainous and difficult of access, and unhealthy. They must be prepared to make a big financial outlay and be physically fit to undertake the venture.

The Government intends to examine every man to ensure he >■ financially and physically fit before it allows him to undertake the journey from the coast. Visitors tn Sydney bring with them fine specimens of both quartz and sluiced gold in support of their statements.
