WAIPUKURAU NOTES.

(Own Correspondent). Tho furniture and effects of Mr. and Mrs. L. Cromie. who suffered tha Joss of all their household goods on Tuesday, were insured in the office of the Eagle, Star, and British Dominions Insurance Co., for £2OO. Mrs. Cromie credits the Border Collie pup which scratched vigorously at the front ’ door, for having awakened her. She had ietired to bed an hour earlier than tha outbreak of fire. The house was insured for £6OO in the South British Office, and the outbuilding for £3O. PERSONAL. Mr. W. Cook, who had the misfortune to have his right leg badly fractured during the progress of last Saturday’s football match, is making good progress at the Waipukurau Hospital. Mr. J. Scott, of the Porangahau Post Office staff has been transferred to Hamilton, and will be leaving shortly. Mr. Scott has always been most popular and obliging and his departure from the district is regretted Mr. S. W. Smith. District Public Trustee, of Napier, and Mr. R. B. Ross, Farm Inspector (ex-M.P. for Pahiatua) were visitors to WaipuKuran and Waipawa during; the past few days. PORANGAHAU. A large meeting of Porangahau householders was held on Monday evening. For the new School Committee there were ten nominations and the following were elected;—Rev R. B. Brierlev and Messrs. A. Healey, H. Hutana, F. Roach and T. O’Connor. The newly-elected committee met subsequently and Mr. Healey was re-elected chairman ano Mr. T. O’Connor secretary and treasurer. Rev. R. B. Briefly and Mr A. Healey were appointed the visiting committee for the month.

TYPHOID EPIDEMIC. Dr. P. H. Buck (Director er Maori Hygiene), who, assisted by the local body inspectors, trained nurses, and the'authorities of the Napier Hospital, is working to free Napier and the surrounding district from the ban of the typhoid epidemic, continued his tour of the infected Maori districts on Wednesday, when he visited Porangahau. He effected many inoculations. besides giving instruction and advice as to the hest methods of combating the disease. The isolated camps and outlying whares are also being inspected, and assistance and advice given where necessary. He is being accompanied by Health Inspector Milne (Napier) and a Departmental nurse. On Wednesday night Dr. Buck delivered a lecture at To Aute College, and yesterday visited the Maoris in the Waipukurau district—one case having been traced hack from Dannevirke to that area. The child’s mother is in the Waipukurau Hospital, and the child was, in consequence, taken to Dannevirke by a grandmother, where entry into the hospital there became subsequently necessary. HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION. For the election of one member to represent the combined districts of part of the Patangata County and the Otane Town District on the Napier Harbour Board, rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr John Joshua Langridge, will be held on Wednesday next. The electors of the Eparaima, Mangatarata. Tamumu, Pourere, Ocro, and Patangata ridings of the County of Patangata, and the Otane Town District, will be entitled to vote at the election. The following are the candidates, nominations closing yesterday:— Paul Hunter (nominated bv Messrs. L. M. Monckton, Waipukurau, and R. H. White, Otane) : John Joshua Langridge (whose nominators were Messrs. A. Watts, and J. N. Barrie, Otane). ORPHANS’ CLUB.

At the annual meeting-of the Waipukurau Orphans’ Club, the Chief Orphan (Rev. R. F. Fish) presiding). Dr. Raymond was elected patron, Mr T. V. Ward Chief Orphan, and G. L. Chatwin. vice-Chief. Mr. B. Mathieson was elected as secretary, and Messrs. G. Moore, J. E. Hall. E. Reckin. and S. Mann the management committee. Mr. S. H. Wood was elected musical director, and recommended as conductor of the orchestra. Mr. A. M. White was reelected auditor and Messrs. Ward, Brandon, and W. G. Bryce as trustees. The club has a credit balance of £24 17s 3d. New members were elected to the number of eight.
