(Received 1. 9.5 a.m.) London, March 31. The question, “Are tennis players too old at 35,” has been raised by the retirement of Gobert, former French champion, on those grounds. Prominent players disagree, declaring there are many over 35 capable of outplaying the younger men. Others say tennis is becoming too much of a business instead of a game. Turnbull, a Davis Cup player, says he is 35, but has no intention of retiring. Larcombe, Wimbledon manager, points out that Ritchie won matches last week though above 50, and Hillyard is still winning though 60. Americans, he said, usually retired at 30 because they played at a breakneck pace, and consequentlv were soon done. Tilden was regarded as a veteran, though only 33. Personally he regarded the retiring age for tennis players when thev were incapable of walking the courts.—(A. and N.Z.)
