The Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson visited Flock House and later Bulls and Marton yesterday, and were accorded warm receptions throughout the tour. The Governor-General eulogised the work of the admistrators of the Flock House fund. He said the scheme was the finest practical example of patriotism. Their Excellencies, at Bulls, were welcomed by the Town Board, and lie addressed a large gathering of school children. O’Neill of the Hastings Fire Brigade, has been appointed delegate to represent the brigade at the District Association’s Conference to be held at Petone during the Easter holidays. The Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society this mornjng decided to ask Messrs. F. L. Gordon and E. Averill to attend the conference of the National Sheepbreeders’ Association, to be held in England. The engagement is announced of Marjorie, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fosbery Nancarrow, of St. Clair, Dunedip, to Bernard Lowry, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Chambers, Te Mata. Havelock North. Messrs Cyril Towsev and J. F. Montague. the adjudicators in the musical and elocutionaresections of the Napier Competitions Society’s Easter Festival, arrived in Napier by last eVenirig’s mail train. On Tuesday last the death took place at Remuera. Auckland, in her 73rd year, of Mrs Agnes Monro, widow of the late Rev. G. B. Monro, for manv years minister of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in that district. At a meeting of the Hastings Fire Brigade last night, Superintendent W. Keith, on behalf of the members, presented ex-Fireman R. Catherall with a silver afternoon tea-set as a testimony of the esteem in which he is held by hi*s comrades after his 28 years’ loyal service in the brigade. Mr. Catherall brief!v replied. At a gathering of the brethren of the Hastings Lodge of Druids, held last Tuesday, Past Secretary Bro. A. C. Johnson was presented with a handsome chiming clock bv Past District President Bro. Burwood on behalf of the members of the lodge, as a slight recogpition of his valuable service during the long term he held office. Bro. A. C. Johnson briefly returned thanks. Bro. A. O. Johnson has been appointed secretary in succession to his father. The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Sydney Francis Sherwood, aged 62, secretary of the Nelson Harbour Board. Deceased was well known in shipping circles throughout the Dominion. He was formerly customs expert at Dunedin. He was one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church at St. Clair (Dunedin), a propunent bowler, and held the honour of D.H.C.R., of the independent Order of Rechabites, the highest office of the order outside of England. Mr. 'diaries Wilson, ParliamentaryLibrarian. .whose retirement was announced yesterday, was met by the staff and friends in Parliament House and presented with a handsome coffee service. Mr. A. F. Lowe, Clerk of Parliament, presided at the function and the Premier, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, was present. Mr. Coates referred to Mr Wilson as a distinguished civil servant and expressed the hope that the projected trip abroad would be pleasant to Mr. and Mrs Wilson and that they would return in the best of health.
