AMERICA BOOMING.

PROGRESS OF ELECTRICITY. Palmerston N., March 30. Mr. W. A. Waters, chief engineer to the Manawatu-Oroua Electric Power Board, who has returned from a trip to the U.S.A., says America is boom- i ing. The majority of industries are ! working at full pressure. He found the electrical systems of New Zealand much behind those of the United States. The State of California, ap- i proximately equal in area to New Zea- ■ lanu, was served by two private com- ’ panies, these being the only two sya terns in the world using 220,000 volt transmission. One of the companies handles a load of 500 v 000 horse-power every night and the area served is about the size of the North Island. Niagara Falls are. illuminated at night with floodlights of 1360 million candle power. In concluding a summary of his impressions. Mr. Waters says that whilte in the States and Canada he travelled on some fliers in the way of expresses, but for thrills round corners the Auckland-Wellington Limited has them all well beaten.
