Main Highways Act
ITS ADMINISTRATION CRITICISED. RESOLUTIONS PASSED. Dunedin, Mar. 31. General dissatisfaction with the manner in which the provisions of the Main Highways Act are being applied in the Otago districts, was expressed at a conference yesterday, comprising delegates from all County Councils in the province, excepting Vincent, the Otago Expansion League, and the Otago Motor Club. The conference criticised many features of the Board *s administrations, and discussed fully th e question of the amount of 'credit of the South Island in the Board’s fund, as well as the relations between County Councils and other bodies under the Act. The following resolutions were carried:—(l) This meeting is in favour of one representative from Borough Councils being appointed to district councils; (2) that the Main Highways Board be asked to grant subsidy of £2 for £1 in place of the present £1 for £1 subsidy for th e construction and maintenance of highways; (3) that the Board be asked to consider the purchasing of road-making machinery in the best markets for disposal to local bodies at cost price, preference to be given to British manufacturers; (4) that the provisions of the Act be altered so that th e subsidy for maintenance of bridges on main highways be not less than £2 for £l. A further resolution: “That in the opinion of the conference the maintenance of main highways should be charged on the general rate,” was not put, as many delegates thought to be favouring it were tied by the bodies they represented.
