CRITICISM OF AUSTRALIANS. PICKING OUT WEAK SPOTS. London, March 29. Clem Hill, in his fourth article, explains that Kelleway’s omission from the Australian cricket team was due solely to the fact that he is a weak slip field, “in fact, he is a poor field in any position,” he says. It was necessary to find a first slip field for Gregory, and the choice rested between Hendry and Kelleway. He believes Hendry, next to Gregory himself, is the best man in this position. Because of this, together with the fact that Ryder was another bowler of Kelleway’s class, the latter was omitted. He regards Andrews as the world’s best cover-point, closely followed by V. Richardson who is unknown to miss catches, but was necessarily omitted in order to include a fast bowler to support and relieve Gregory. Hendren and Taylor are easily the best outfields. Ponsford will have to quicken up. Viewing the situation as a whole, he regards Australia’s outfielding as the weakest spot.—(A. and N.Z.) TO PLAY MANAWATU. The following players have been chosen by Mr. K. M. Chadwick, sole selector, to represent Hawke’s Bay against Manawatu in Napier on Easter Saturday and Monday:—T. C. Lowry (captain), R. L. Paterson, E. Mitchell, C. Beuth, G. R. White, D. G. Davis (Heretaunga), H. A. Owen, H. S. Stephenson (H. 5.0.8. F. F. Cane (Scinde). C. Temperton (United) and T. Reaney (High School), M. Beuth (Heretaunga) is twelfth man.
